Born in Winnipeg, C.S. Morrissey earned his B.Sc. from the University of Manitoba and wrote database software for investment dealers and money market traders in both Manitoba and British Columbia. He ran his own software company in the 1990s, known as More C Communications Inc., a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider. In the same decade, he obtained a B.A. in Ancient Greek from the University of British Columbia. He also earned his M.A. in Classics (Greek and Latin) from the University of British Columbia, where he wrote his thesis “Studies in Aristotle’s Physics” under the supervision of Dr. R.B. Todd. In 2005, he obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Simon Fraser University for his interdisciplinary Special Arrangements dissertation “Mirror of Princes”, which made an Aristotelian-Thomistic study of the Catholic thinker René Girard. He is also a member of the Institute for Advanced Physics.
Dr. Morrissey’s principal academic interests lie in defending and advancing the great Catholic tradition of Aristotelian Thomism, which emphasizes the importance of the study of the philosophy of nature. The philosophy of nature was something that was exceedingly important to both Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas and is therefore absolutely crucial for understanding and appreciating their perennial contributions to philosophy. He is a member of the Canadian Jacques Maritain Association and he contributes to keeping the flame of Aristotelian Thomism alive by presenting various public lectures and conference papers. He has taught classes at all three Simon Fraser University campuses (Harbour Centre, Burnaby Mountain, and Surrey) as well as at Trinity Western University and Redeemer Pacific College. He even acts as a professional consultant for the local movie and television industry, teaching actors as a Latin dialogue coach. He is recognized by many through his journalism in the pages of publications like The Globe and Mail and The B.C. Catholic. He leads a Thomas Aquinas Study Circle every week and also blogs the Summa Theologiae of St. Thomas every day. He considers his great contemporary mentors to be Benedict M. Ashley, O.P., James V. Schall, S.J., and William A. Wallace, O.P. and he is passionate above all about communicating the great tradition of Latin Philosophy: i.e., the permanent contributions to human thought that were carefully worked out over the course of over a dozen centuries, from Augustine to Aquinas to John of St. Thomas, and all written up in the glorious Latin language.
At Redeemer Pacific College, Dr. Morrissey teaches the following courses:
